Alternator Basics and Data Sheet Review

Course Description: Alternators are an integral part of the backup generator set. There are complex forces and variables at play that are both intriguing and useful to understand. Some of these dictates why alternators are built the way they are, others determine how to ensure safety by properly applying protective devices. Alternator data sheets are also complex and inconsistent between manufacturers. This course aims to simplify the inner workings of the alternator and point out the key alternator data sheet items to understand. The course is free of charge.

Objectives: After this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain basic design principles of AC alternators commonly used in industrial generator sets.
2. Explain how alternators are protected electromagnetically.
3. Identify and use key data points found on alternator data sheets.
